Dr Steffen Heeg is a gastroenterologist and specialist in gastrointestinal oncology at the Department of Internal Medicine and the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg. He graduated from Freiburg University Medical School in 2007. His thesis on the molecular carcinogenesis of esophageal cancer received the grade “summa cum laude“. Thereafter he started his clinical training in Internal Medicine and Hematology/Oncology at the University Medical Center Freiburg. In 2011 he was awarded a Research Scholarship by the “Deutsche Krebshilfe“ and worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Lab of Professor A.K. Rustgi at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA, on the molecular pathogenesis of pancreatic cancer. He was awarded the 2014 Fellow Abstract Prize by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). After his return in 2014 he joined the Department of Medicine II (Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endocrinology and Infectious Diseases in Freiburg where he established his own lab and specialized in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and developed his clinical focus in Gastrointestinal Oncology. His scientific work is focused on the transcriptional control of pancreatic tissue homeostasis, cancer development and progression. He is the Clinical Coordinator of Gastroenterology at Gastrointestinal Cancer Center and at the International Center for Pancreatic Cancer at the University of Freiburg Medical Center. He actively involved in a number of clinical trials on gastrointestinal cancer. Dr Heeg has a strong clinical focus on neuroendocrine tumours and is the head of the specialized NET-outpatient clinic at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg. He recently extended his research interests on the molecular mechanisms of invasion and metastasis of neuroendocrine tumours.
