Prof. François Mach, MD, is a world-renowned cardiologist and scientist specialising in atherosclerosis, vascular biology, and preventive cardiology.

 

With an h-index >120, over 54,000 citations, and more than 850 publications, he is a leading authority in the field of cardiovascular disease development, progression, and prevention.

 

Following his medical and cardiology training at the University of Geneva and a formative postdoctoral fellowship in Prof. Peter Libby’s laboratory at Harvard Medical School, he established his foundational work on inflammation in atherogenesis.

 

Since 2006 he has been the head of the Cardiology Department at Geneva University Hospital, served as President of the Swiss Society of Cardiology (2012–2014) and continues to treat ambulatory/hospitalized patients regularly.

 

Prof. François Mach has been instrumental in developing and leading several major Swiss cardiovascular cohorts, including the SPUM-ACS cohort, which includes over 8,000 patients with acute coronary syndrome, and has established a robust infrastructure for clinical and translational research. His work spans from basic science to large-scale clinical trials and real-world evidence studies in lipidology and acute coronary syndromes.

 

A key contributor to international clinical guidelines, he co-chaired the 2019 ESC/EAS Guidelines for the management of dyslipidaemia and the 2021 ESC Guidelines on cardiovascular disease prevention. Recently, he co-chaired the 2025 ESC/EAS Focused Update on Dyslipidaemia Guidelines. His research is supported by numerous grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the European Union, and various foundations.
